I think it is questionable that the best illustration of Arab culture shown to us in class is Aladdin and Lawrence of Arabia. The second film didn’t bother me as much as the first. Is a cartoon the most reliable insight into the Arabian society. I do believe that there are a few scenes in this movie that accurately illustrate Arabian culture but the scene that was chosen to be showed to us was a tradesman hustling his merchandise. Why not choose the scene where Jasmine and Aladdin are walking through the market place? Or the scene where the two characters are at the festival which is filled with representations of Arabian culture, including examples of Arabian femininity. I thought that this was a very stereotypical representation of Arabian culture which might have inspired a biased towards this culture. This type of action had no place in a college classroom…especially an upper division class.
